Haven’t Posted in Awhile… February 1, 2010

I’m still here. Just contemplating what I want to do with this blog. I’m considering moving it to another site. I’m considering more tutorials. I’m considering how to make it through the day without a nap.

Just things I’m considering…

Victoria Photographer | Happy Monday January 11, 2010

Tonight was mentor meeting night. Time to discuss the goals. I’ve been pretty slack lately on achieving my goals so I’m pumped to reenergize and focus. I also have made some lofty long  term goals which will take a bit of effort but will be so worth it in the long term. And of course, my main life goal which is to have fun. Because what’s the point otherwise??

An outtake from my 365 project (because my next few shots are macros and I want to do a tutorial tomorrow on that).

Happy Monday

Victoria Photographer | Happy Birthday! January 7, 2010

It’s my sister’s birthday today. Getting older…

Course she will always have the come back that I am older than her and have more grey hair. ‘Tis true. It is the pain of being the older sibling.

But Happy Birthday Nadine… my wacky, wacky sister.

Victoria Photographer | More 365 Pictures January 6, 2010

Ah, it Wednesday. Half way done the week. And the first full day week I’ve had in almost a month. I think everyone should work 4 day weeks. It’s just so much more… bearable. Ha.

I went to dance class today. I was super sleepy and didn’t want to go but there is just something so appealing in wearing a long skirt and whipping it around. Love it.

Nov 15 – Day 138

Ah, chores…

Nov 16 – Day 139

This is an outtake. I’m not sure what I was doing but look at my hair. Sure, it’s not in focus but who cares.

Nov 17 – Day 140

Some days, the world outside is scary.

Nov 18 – Day 141

All it seems like I do is edit sometimes.

Nov 19 – Day 142

I love noodles!

Nov 20 – Day 143

Interesting… yes I do think I take too many self portraits.

Victoria Photographer | Happy {belated} New Year! January 5, 2010

I took a break from blogging. It seems that taking nine dance classes a week, working full time, taking pictures and blogging is hard work. Well, maybe not hard work but fills up one’s plate. I’m going to try to do better. I’m thinking of moving the site but we’ll see about that.

So, I don’t really make New Year’s Resolutions. They just happen to be goals that start at the beginning of the year. Yes, okay, maybe they are resolutions. But I make goals all year long. And I’m determined to stick to these ones.

  1. Blog.
  2. Eat Healthier

That’s it. If you do too much too soon, then you will fizzle out by February. Eating healthier is going well. Someone put candy on the file cabinet behind my desk today, and I managed not to eat any. Small victories.

Anyways, back to the 365. I have a lot to catch up on.

Nov 9 – Day 132

Nov 10 – Day 133

My not impressed face.

Nov 11 – Day 134

I like night shots.

Nov 12 – Day 135

Some days it’s a victory just to pick up the camera.

Nov 13 – Day 136

Clearly I was in a self portrait phase.

Nov 14 – Day 137

Which one do you like better?

Happy New Year everyone! May it bring all the best.

Natural Talentless | Victoria Photographer November 19, 2009

Isn’t it strange that the things that give you the greatest joy, are the things that don’t come easily. Like math. Math came easily in high school. Am I a mathematician these days? Ew. No.

I’m not a natural dancer. I totally admit it. I don’t have natural lines… mostly because I lack flexibility. Seriously. The day I’m able to touch my toes, I will cry. Hard. But I go to class faithfully, and I work hard. And judging by the amount of sweat pouring off me, I’m one of the hardest workers in class. I may never be “good” but I don’t care. I love dancing.

The same goes for photography. There were some people at school that were natural photographers. They saw the angles, the shots. Me… I have to work hard. But that doesn’t bug me. I can see progress if nothing else. But every once in a while, I think I hit it. And I’m mighty proud of this picture. Not just because I’m in it. :)

So, WordPress won’t currently allow me to post videos. I have done a stop motion for my 365, so if you want to see it you can view it either on flickr, facebook or youtube.

Tips on being a better photographer- Tuesday Tutorial | Victoria Photographer November 17, 2009

Here are some tips I got from school and around the web on some ideas of how to improve your photography skills.

  1. Don’t go crazy buying the most expensive equipment right away. Equipment helps but it doesn’t make a photographer. You can take amazing pictures with toy plastic cameras. Buy something only when you find you can’t live without it.
  2. Tripod. TRIPOD! Sure it limits creativity but it teaches you to slow down and really look at your subject. There is also a tendency to see only the subject and not see distracting elements in the background. It also eliminates camera shake.
  3. Keep your camera with you all the time. Or, keep A camera with you all the time. Chase Jarvis, one of the big names in advertising photography, takes a picture a day with his iphone. His stuff is amazing and would have been missed if he didn’t have something to take the image with.
  4. Don’t overlook the mundane. Look around your house. There maybe something amazing but you just need to look at it in a different view. Or, try this experiment – map out 1 meter by 1 meter square in a park or your room. Stay there for 30 minutes. See what you can find.
  5. Enjoy the learning process. There is always something new to learn in photography. You will never be done. So you might as well enjoy it.
  6. Experiment with your camera’s setting. Try something different. If it doesn’t work, try to figure out why it didn’t. You have digital…. Errors are free.
  7. Learn the basic rules. Technical. Composition. Then learn how you can break them.
  8. Take photos regularly. You will forget what you have learned if you don’t practice. Try a 365 project.
  9. Try a different eye. A switch may spark new creativity. Also, most right handed people use their right eye.  However, the left eye is connected to the right side of the brain – the creative side.

Joys of Getting Older | Victoria Photographer November 16, 2009

I’m not a big fan of the bathroom at work. Sure, it’s a lovely place to escape for a moment of quiet. I may have even fell asleep in there once. Just for a split second. Honest. 6:30 start times do NOT agree with me.

However, there is something about the lighting in that bathroom. At home, nothing. But I get into the bathroom at work, run my hands through my hair and bam! Grey hair galore. I pull them out but there seems to be more the next time I check. Maybe work is causing it.

I ordered this from China. A veil to go with my belly dance costume. Super cheap over Ebay. And yet… I have no dance that requires a veil…

Sometimes I don`t think these things through.
