Yay, a job! June 24, 2009

Filed under: Conceptual Portraiture, Portraits — sharinakagawa @ 11:12 pm

I have been working part time the last year. Very glamourous and all. It has paid some of the bills and allowed me to stay lower in debt than I could have been. But I just came out of school and I’m broke. Working three days a week just doesn’t cut it. So, I was thrilled that my old job came up again. I applied and was hired today. Easy breezy.

Yes, I know. I’m supposed to be a photographer. And I will be. It will take time and in the meantime, I want to move and start paying off my school debt. So back to the office. But with plenty of time for night time portraits, weekend weddings and the odd photography class in between. And dance class. Which MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!

So it is appropriate that I post this picture from my portfolio. Because that is how I feel right about now. Especially after being in a bad mood for the last  2 weeks. This is Makenna. She is the daughter of someone that I used to work with and someone who I will be working with soon enough. I envisioned her lying down drawing next to the message but she just told me “NO”. Can you sit down? “No”. Can you look at the camera? “NO!” Can you stop running? “No”. This shot is of her running. Fortuantely she is three and doesn’t run that fast and because of sports action class I know how to stop action haha. Action shot.

Life is Beautiful, ehh Makenna.

Done, done and DONE June 23, 2009

Filed under: Conceptual Portraiture, Portraits — sharinakagawa @ 6:25 pm

I graduated last Wednesday. After all that soul searching, deciding, going for it, working hard, slacking, panicking, final touches… it is over. Funny how fast a year can go. I didn’t get the greatest grade on my portfolio but I don’t care. Photography is subjective and now that school is over, I can work on MY style and not worry about what the teacher will think.

I’m feeling a little lost without school and without a full time job. I haven’t picked up my camera in a few weeks. I suppose I just need a small break.

But in the meantime… enjoy another picture. I will be starting a 365 project soon, so you will see new photos on this blog everyday (hopefully!!!).

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

This is my friend Lucy. Isn’t she great? I met her in Japan when we were both teachers, and she has decided to continue on and become a real teacher. And by real teacher I mean one with a teaching degree. She’s headed for Qatar to teach in an international school and I am sooooo jealous!!!!

I’m almost done! / Shari Nakagawa Photography/ Victoria BC/ portraits weddings June 3, 2009

I got my first batch of prints back from my printer today. Gorgeous. Love them. Finally found a portfolio at Opus. Another stress gone. Second batch of prints went to the printer today… and now just two more images to work on and then I will be done!!!

The heat is delicious. Makes me want a patio. But instead I will leave you with this shot which I title the space between. Amazing what you can shoot outside of a mall.

We can't leave the light....

We can't leave the light....

Now I just need to start planning my curriculum for my first class of the mini course I’m teaching next week. Why don’t they have a pill for motivation?

American Gothic – Victoria BC Photographer, Shari Nakagawa Photography May 31, 2009

Another portfolio image. My friend Stephen is such a foodie, amazing cook… so I thought it would be great to have him in a suit with a twinkie and a blank expression. My tribute to that great painting, American Gothic. Afterwards we had fun playing with enjoying the twinkie… which was fun. Stephen had a little too much fun, ya know??

What if you were to put a woman in a suitcase??? May 30, 2009

And what if you were to put her in that suitcase in the middle of the New West Quay … full of tourists.

You’d get alot of weird looks, you would. But, you would also get an interesting picture!

Arrived finally... now get me outta here!!

Beware the man with the gun May 29, 2009

I feel like I should be telling a story. A story of a man… with a mission. But really, I just made my friend Jason put on a suit, hold a water gun and look pissed off. I told him to channel work rage… seems to have worked.

Man with water gun!!! duh duh duhhhhhhh

Man with water gun!!! duh duh duhhhhhhh

This is the first of my portfolio posts. Mostly because Jason was asking about it tonight… so I figured why not. This shot was actually a happy coincidence. I had a red gelled flash lighting the tunnel but it didn’t go off on this occasion. But I like it anyways. The lighting is ambient and it was shot at MacCauley Point in Victoria. I desaturated the shot and lightened and darkened some areas, but overall it is as shot.

Conceptual portraiture. Gotta love it!!!
